According to a study published in Social Science Research, one in four people will either cheat on their partner or be cheated on, which proves infidelity is super common, even though it hurts like a bitch.
With that said, being cheated on sucks a lot less if you’re able to recognize the signs that your girlfriend is sleeping around with other people, because that way, you can get yourself out of that mess before she shits all over your pure and loving heart.
But while some of the red flags of cheating are super easy to spot — like if there's a random dude in your bed — others are more subtle, and easy to miss if you're not careful. That's why we're lucky Viral Thread put together a list of sneaky ways to know when a cheater is about to strike.
However, please note that these clues are not proof that you're being cheated on, but just something to keep in mind.
1. SHE'S CONSTANTLY ON HER PHONE
Sure, most people have their phone on them at all times, and take it into the bathroom with them and generally don’t leave it sitting unaccompanied. However, if she seems a little extra attached to her phone and snatches it off the table real fast whenever it goes off, it might be a sign she’s getting some texts that she definitely doesn’t want you to see.
2. HER PHONE IS ALWAYS ON SILENT, OR SHE DOESN’T ANSWER CERTAIN CALLS
Think of it this way: If you were cheating on someone and your sidepiece calls during dinner or something, would you pick up? Or would you screen their call and call them back in private? Probably the latter.
3. SHE WON’T LET YOU LOOK THROUGH HER PHONE OR COMPUTER
Again with the phone stuff, but if she’s a little too reluctant to give you the password to her phone or laptop for you to make a call or look something up, or if she changes her password immediately after telling you, she might be hiding something.
But then again, she’s under no obligation to let you look through her phone, so this one varies case by case.
4. SHE’S NOT INTERESTED IN HAVING SEX
All long-term couples go through phases where the passion dies down and the sex isn’t as good as it used to be, but if your girlfriend suddenly starts throwing around those dreaded “not tonight, babe” excuses like confetti, there might be a problem – especially if she used to have an insatiable sex drive.
5. SHE STARTS USING NEW PHRASES, OR HAS NEW INTERESTS
When you hang around a person for too long, the way they talk, the quirky phrases they use, and their interests start to rub off on you, right? Right. This can happen at work, at the gym, wherever…. but if she’s being super secretive about her friends, you might want to get your guard up a little.
This is also true if she's using new sex moves in the sack. Where did she learn to do that? Hmmm...
6. SHE KEEPS SMILING AT HER PHONE, BUT WON’T TELL YOU WHAT SHE’S SMILING AT
If she were looking at funny memes, she’d totally show you if you ask her what's so funny. But if she’s smiling at cute texts from her other man, she’s obviously not going to show you the adulterous messages that are flooding her phone.
7. SHE’S SUDDENLY SUPER HAPPY AND FEELS REALLY GOOD ABOUT HERSELF
It’s always heartwarming to see the person you love feel happy, but it can be a little suspicious if her mood skyrockets for absolutely no reason. Sure, certain life events can be exciting, but if she’s not telling you what she’s feeling so spectacular about, it might be wise to watch out.
8. SHE GETS DEFENSIVE OVER THE SIMPLEST OF QUESTIONS
If you ask her where she is or what she’s doing like any boyfriend would, and she snaps at you with a harsh, slightly mean reply, or says something extremely vague, she might be cheating, dude.
9. SHE STARTS ACCUSING YOU OF CHEATING
Unless she's a total psychopath with absolutely no remorse for cheating on you, odds are she feels slightly guilty about sleeping with other men. And as a defense mechanism, she's going to project it on you, because that way, it puts you on the defense, and creates a false illusion that she actually values fidelity.
10. SHE FORGETS WHAT STORIES SHE'S TOLD YOU
If she's juggling more than one dude, she's definitely going to get her stories mixed up at some point. Psychologist Dr. Colleen Long tells Glamour: "If your partner frequently starts stories with, 'Did I tell you this already?' it could mean they're having trouble keeping track of multiple confidants
